2. Time yourself strictly. If the paper allows 2 hours plus 15 minutes of reading time, use those 15 minutes to read before you start writing. The Mathematics paper explicitly states you must not start writing during reading time.

Common Mistakes Students Make With These Papers

Students lose marks on quarterly papers in predictable ways. Here are the errors to avoid, based on what these papers test:

• Ignoring the reading time rule. The Mathematics and several 2018 papers give 15 minutes only for reading. If you start writing during this time, you may lose marks or face a penalty.
• Mixing up trade discount and cash discount in Accounts. The 2018 Accounts paper gives a transaction with both a 10% trade discount and a 5% cash discount. Trade discount is deducted before recording the sale. Cash discount is recorded separately when payment is received.
• Forgetting CGST and SGST in the 2019 Accounts paper. The 2019 paper assumes 6% CGST and 6% SGST on sales entries. If you omit the tax calculation, your sales book total will be wrong.
• Skipping working steps in Computer Science. The 2018 paper states that all working, including rough work, must be done on the same sheet. Examiners give marks for the dry run, not just the final output.
• Writing long answers for 2-mark questions. Part I questions across Business Studies, Economics, and Commerce carry 2 marks each. Write two clear points, not a full essay.

Worked Example: Trade and Cash Discount in Accounts

The 2018 Accounts paper asks you to journalise a purchase with both trade and cash discounts. Here is how to handle a transaction of that type:

Transaction: Purchased goods for Rs. 1,00,000 from D. Lal, less 10% trade discount. 50% paid by cheque, less 5% cash discount.

Step 1 — Calculate the trade discount. The list price is Rs. 1,00,000. A 10% trade discount means Rs. 10,000 off. The net purchase price is 100000 – 10000 = 90000.

Step 2 — Record the purchase entry. The Purchases account is debited by Rs. 90,000 and D. Lal’s account is credited by Rs. 90,000. Trade discount never appears in the journal.

Step 3 — Calculate the cash discount on payment. Half the amount, Rs. 45,000, is paid by cheque. A 5% cash discount applies: 45000 \times 0.05 = 2250. The cheque amount is 45000 – 2250 = 42750.

Step 4 — Record the payment entry. D. Lal’s account is debited by Rs. 45,000. The Bank account is credited by Rs. 42,750. The Discount Allowed account is credited by Rs. 2,250.
