What the 2018 and 2019 Quarterly Papers Cover

The two papers on this page test the same ISC Class 11 Economics syllabus, but they differ in structure and total marks. You need to know these differences before you practise with either paper.

The 2018 quarterly paper carries 50 marks with a time allowance of 2 hours plus 15 minutes. Part I has 10 short-answer questions worth 2 marks each. Part II requires you to attempt any three questions, with each worth 10 marks.

The 2019 quarterly paper carries 80 marks with a time allowance of 3 hours plus 15 minutes. Part I again has 10 questions of 2 marks each. Part II asks you to attempt any five questions, with each worth 12 marks. The longer format means you must write more detailed answers.

Both papers test introductory microeconomics, basic macroeconomic concepts, and statistics. The 2019 paper places more weight on long-answer questions because of its 12-mark structure.

Topics That Recur Across Both Papers

Certain topics appear in both the 2018 and 2019 quarterly tests. These are the areas you should study first, since the examiners clearly treat them as foundational for Class 11 Economics.

TopicAsked in 2018Asked in 2019
Microeconomics definition and scopeYes (Part I)Yes (Part II)
Central problems of an economyYes (Part I)Yes (Part II)
Aggregate demand and aggregate savingYes (Part I)Yes (Part I)
Statistics: data collection and limitationsYes (Part I)Yes (Part I)
Capitalist vs socialist economy featuresNot askedYes (Part I and II)

The central problems of an economy appear in both years, but at different difficulty levels. In 2018 you must briefly explain the ‘How to produce’ problem for 2 marks. In 2019 the same topic carries 6 marks and asks whether all economies face similar central problems.

How to Use These Papers for Exam Preparation

Use these quarterly tests to check your preparation after finishing your first-term chapters. Do not look at the paper before you attempt it. Treat each paper as a real exam.

  1. Read the full question paper once and note the marks for each section.
  2. Set a timer for the exact duration stated on that paper.
  3. Answer Part I first. These short questions test your recall of definitions and features.
  4. Choose your Part II questions wisely. In the 2018 paper you attempt any three from Part II. In the 2019 paper you attempt any five.
  5. After finishing, check your answers against your textbook notes. Mark yourself strictly according to the marks shown in brackets.

You can find the textbook chapters that back these tests on our Class 11 main page. For the full set of ISC Economics books across classes, visit our ICSE books section.

Worked Example: Central Problems of an Economy

This topic appears in both papers, so it is worth understanding how to answer it at different mark levels.

2-mark answer (2018 style): State the problem briefly. The central problem of ‘How to produce’ asks an economy to choose between labour-intensive and capital-intensive methods of production. One sentence with the core idea is enough.

6-mark answer (2019 style): You must list all three central problems and explain each one. The problems are what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce. Then address whether all economies face these problems. Every economy faces scarcity, so every economy must make these choices regardless of its system.

Marking Guidance From the Paper Tags

The mark tags in brackets tell you how much to write. A common mistake is writing a long essay for a 2-mark question and running out of time for the 10-mark or 12-mark questions.

  • 2-mark questions (Part I): Give a definition or state two features. Two to three lines are enough. Do not draw diagrams unless the question asks for one.
  • 10-mark questions (2018 Part II): Explain the concept, give features, and use examples. Structure your answer with clear points.
  • 12-mark questions (2019 Part II): These often have sub-parts like (a), (b), and (c) worth 3, 3, and 6 marks. Answer each sub-part separately and label them.

The 2018 paper asks you to draw a time series graph for population data. The 2019 paper asks how an increase in resources affects the production possibility curve. Practise both types of diagram questions.

Common Mistakes Students Make With These Papers

  • Ignoring the reading time: Both papers allow 15 minutes of reading time. Use it to read every question and decide which Part II questions you will attempt.
  • Mixing up microeconomics and macroeconomics: Both papers ask you to distinguish between them. Keep your definitions separate and clear.
  • Skipping diagrams: The 2018 paper explicitly asks you to illustrate the four phases of the business cycle in a diagram. A written answer without the diagram loses marks.
  • Not checking the attempt rule: The 2018 paper says attempt any three from Part II. The 2019 paper says attempt any five. Read the instruction block before you start.
