What the English 1 and English 2 papers cover
The downloads span two separate exams. English Paper 1 tests language skills: composition writing, comprehension, grammar, and a short writing task. English Paper 2 tests literature through extract-based questions on drama, poetry, and prose.
Both papers follow a strict timing format. You get 15 minutes of reading time before the writing period begins. The reading time is for studying the question paper only; you cannot write answers during it.
Exam pattern: marks and time allowed by year
The papers show a clear shift in structure between 2017 and later years. The table below states each year’s own marks and duration as printed on the paper.
| Year | Paper | Marks | Time allowed | Questions to attempt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2017 | Paper 1 (Language) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | All four |
| 2017 | Paper 2 (Literature) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | Five in all |
| 2018 | Paper 1 (Language) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | All four |
| 2018 | Paper 2 (Literature) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | Five in all |
| 2019 | Paper 1 (Language) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | All five |
| 2019 | Paper 2 (Literature) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | Five in all |
| 2020 | Paper 1 (Language) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | All five |
| 2020 | Paper 2 (Literature) | Not stated on excerpt | Two hours | Five in all |
| 2023 | Paper 1 (Language) | 80 | Two hours | All five |
| 2023 | Paper 2 (Literature) | 80 | Two hours | Five in all |
From 2019 onward, Paper 1 changed to five questions instead of four. The 2023 papers explicitly print Maximum Marks: 80 on the cover. Earlier papers state the two-hour duration but do not print a total on the opening block.
Recurring question types across years
Certain question formats appear repeatedly in the English Language papers. The composition prompt in Question 1 follows a consistent pattern across all years.
- Original short story with a given title or opening line — asked in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2023.
- For or against a statement (argumentative essay) — appears in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2023.
- Narrate an incident from personal experience — asked in 2017 and 2018.
- Descriptive writing of a scene, place, or time of day — appears in 2018 and 2020.
In Literature, The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare is the drama text in every Paper 2 excerpt from 2017 to 2023. Extract-based questions ask who is speaking, where the scene takes place, and what specific lines mean.
How to use these papers for exam preparation
Working through past papers builds two skills: time control and question recognition. The papers print suggested time limits for each question, which tells you exactly how to pace yourself.
- Start with the most recent papers (2023, 2020) because they match the current five-question format.
- Use the 15-minute reading time to read all questions before writing. Plan which composition option you will attempt.
- Time Question 1 to 30 minutes in papers from 2019 onward. The paper prints this advisory on the cover.
- Time Question 2 to 20 minutes. The cover page prints this limit as well.
- Practice literature extracts by writing who, where, and what for each passage. Quote short phrases from the text to support your answers.

Common mistakes students make in English papers
Students lose marks in predictable ways on both papers. Knowing these errors helps you avoid them.
- Exceeding the word limit in composition. The 2017 paper asks for 350-400 words; from 2019 onward it asks for 300-350 words. Writing far over or under the limit costs marks.
- Spending too long on Question 1. The paper advises 30 minutes (or 35 in 2017). If you spend 45 minutes, you lose time for the remaining questions.
- Not quoting the text in literature answers. Paper 2 extract questions require you to refer to the passage. Answers without textual references score low.
- Choosing a composition topic you cannot structure. The argumentative option requires a clear for or against stance. Sitting on the fence weakens your answer.
- Ignoring the reading time. The 15 minutes before writing are for planning. Students who skip planning often start, cross out, and restart — wasting writing time.
Marking guidance from the bracket tags
The papers print intended marks in brackets like [20] for the composition and [3] for sub-parts of literature questions. Your answer length should match the marks.
- A 20-mark composition needs a clear structure: introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Write 300-350 words as directed.
- A 3-mark literature sub-question needs 3 to 4 precise sentences. State the fact, then explain it with a short quote.
- A 5-mark or higher question needs detailed answers with multiple points and textual references.
