What the Geography Paper 2 exam looks like
Every paper in this set is an 80-mark, two-hour exam labelled H.C.G. Paper – 2 (or H.G.T. Paper – 2 for the Thailand variant). The paper gives you 15 minutes of reading time before you start writing. You must write answers on a separate sheet provided to you.
The structure is the same across all years:
- Part I is compulsory and carries 30 marks. Question 1 is a multiple-choice section worth [20] marks based on a map extract or diagram.
- Part II requires five questions from a choice of options. The remaining 50 marks come from this part.
- Mark tags like [20] and [10] appear in brackets next to each question.
The standard Indian papers come with a Survey of India Map Sheet (No. G43S7 or G43S10) and 20 cm of twine for measuring distances. The Thailand papers include an Outline Map of Thailand instead. You must hand the map extract back to the supervising examiner before leaving the hall.
Which map sheets and topics appear year by year
The papers use two different Survey of India map sheets, and knowing which one appeared helps you practise with the right extract:
| Year | Paper type | Map sheet supplied |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | H.C.G. Paper 2 | G43S7 |
| 2024 | H.C.G. Paper 2 | G43S7 |
| 2025 | H.C.G. Paper 2 | G43S10 |
| 2025 (Specimen) | H.C.G. Paper 2 | G43S10 |
| 2026 | H.C.G. Paper 2 | G43S7 |
| 2023 | H.G.T. Paper 2 (Thailand) | Outline Map of Thailand |
| 2024 | H.G.T. Paper 2 (Thailand) | Outline Map of Thailand |
| 2025 | H.G.T. Paper 2 (Thailand) | Outline Map of Thailand |
Across the 2023, 2024, and 2025 papers, certain question types recur every year. Topographic map reading is the most frequent topic. Question 1 always asks you to identify grid references, landforms, and directions from the map extract. Settlement identification and transport connectivity between settlements also appear in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
How to use these papers for revision
Start with the most recent paper and work backwards. The 2025 and 2026 papers reflect the current question style most closely. Use the older 2023 papers for extra practice once you are comfortable with the format.
- Read the map extract first. Spend the 15-minute reading time studying the grid, contours, and symbols before touching your pen.
- Practise Question 1 under timer. The 20-mark MCQ section rewards speed. Aim to finish it in 25 minutes.
- Attempt five full Part II questions from each paper under exam conditions. Write your answers in serial order as the paper instructs.
- Use the twine for distance questions. Measure along roads and paths, not in straight lines, unless the question asks for straight-line distance.
- Mark the map neatly. The paper tells you to use arrows to avoid overcrowding. Examiners deduct marks for messy or unclear map work.

Common mistakes students make in Geography Paper 2
| Mistake | Correct approach |
|---|---|
| Writing the full question in MCQ answers | The paper says “Do not copy the questions”. Write only the correct option letter or answer. |
| Measuring distance in straight lines | Use the twine along the actual road or path shown on the map. Convert centimetres to kilometres using the map scale. |
| Answering sub-sections out of order | The instructions say all sub-sections must be answered in correct serial order. Skipping around costs marks. |
| Overcrowding the map with labels | Use arrows to point to features. Keep the map clean so the examiner can read your markings. |
| Taking the map extract home | You must hand the Survey of India map sheet back to the supervising examiner. The Thailand outline map gets fastened to your answer booklet. |
Worked example: grid reference and direction
Question 1 in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 papers asks you to find a four-figure grid reference for a settlement and state the direction of one settlement from another. Here is how to solve this type.
Example: Settlement B is located in grid square 5710. Settlement A is in grid square 5610.
- Step 1 — Read the grid reference. The four-figure grid reference comes from the bottom-left corner of the square. Settlement B sits in square 5710.
- Step 2 — Find the direction. Settlement A is in square 5610, which is directly west of 5710. So settlement A lies due west of settlement B.
- Step 3 — Check your answer. Grid numbers increase eastward (left to right) and northward (bottom to top). If the first number decreases, you are moving west.
For a 2-mark question, state the grid reference and the direction clearly. For a 10-mark question, add the measurement method, the scale conversion, and the final answer with units.

What is the difference between the H.C.G. and H.G.T. papers?
The H.C.G. Paper 2 is the standard Indian Geography paper with a Survey of India map sheet. The H.G.T. Paper 2 is the Thailand variant, which uses an Outline Map of Thailand instead. Both are 80-mark, two-hour papers with the same Part I and Part II structure.
Do all papers have the same time and marks?
Yes. Every paper in this set carries 80 marks and allows two hours of writing time, plus 15 minutes of reading time before you start writing.
Do I need to bring my own map or twine?
No. The exam supplies the Survey of India map sheet and 20 cm of twine with the paper. You must return the map sheet to the supervising examiner at the end. The Thailand papers include an outline map that you fasten to your answer booklet.
