icse board exam is the Class 10 secondary school certificate examination — conducted annually by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). CISCE is a national-level private board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. First conducted in 1958, the ICSE board examination is taken by students across more than 2,500 affiliated schools in India and abroad. On this page, you will find the exam pattern, syllabus overview, year-wise updates for 2021 through 2023, and completely free PDF study materials for ICSE Classes 6 through 10.

What Does ICSE Stand For?

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education is the full form of ICSE. The examination is administered by CISCE, a private, national-level board headquartered in New Delhi. Unlike state boards, CISCE affiliates schools across all Indian states and in several overseas countries.

The ICSE board conducts two major examinations: the ICSE (Class 10) and the ISC (Class 12). Both are internationally recognised, which makes the ICSE board a preferred choice for families considering higher education abroad. The board emphasises English-medium instruction and a broad, application-based curriculum.

ICSE Class 10 students must appear in a minimum of six subjects, with English Language being compulsory. The wide subject choice — including subjects such as Art, Environmental Science, and Computer Science — sets the ICSE board apart from most other national boards in India.

Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme Explained

The ICSE board exam for Class 10 carries a total of 100 marks per subject, split between internal assessment and a written board paper. Understanding this split is essential for scoring well, since internal marks can be secured throughout the academic year.

Most subjects follow an 80-mark written paper and a 20-mark internal assessment pattern. Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) include a practical component within the internal 20 marks. The written paper is typically 2 hours long for most subjects and 2.5 hours for Mathematics.

The following table summarises the standard marking breakdown for core ICSE Class 10 subjects:

SubjectWritten Paper (Marks)Internal Assessment (Marks)Total
English Language8020100
Mathematics8020100
Chemistry8020100
Physics8020100
Biology8020100
History & Civics8020100

CISCE does not award a passing grade subject-by-subject in isolation — students must secure an aggregate pass across all subjects. A minimum of 33% in each subject is required to be declared passed at the ICSE board level.

ICSE Board Exam 2023 Syllabus Overview

For the ICSE board exam 2023 class 10, CISCE restored the full pre-pandemic syllabus after the reduced syllabi used in 2021 and 2022. Students in 2023 were examined on the complete course prescription issued by CISCE for each subject.

Key subjects and their syllabus highlights for 2023 are listed below. These are based on CISCE’s official course prescriptions and the Selina Concise and ML Aggarwal textbooks used by most ICSE-affiliated schools.

  • Mathematics — Chapters covering Commercial Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Statistics, and Trigonometry as prescribed in the ML Aggarwal and Selina Concise Class 10 texts.
  • Chemistry — Topics spanning Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Acids/Bases/Salts, Analytical Chemistry, Mole Concept, Electrolysis, Metallurgy, Organic Chemistry, and Atmospheric Pollution across nine chapters.
  • Physics — Units covering Force, Work and Energy, Light, Sound, Electricity, and Modern Physics as detailed in the CISCE course prescription.
  • History & Civics — Indian and world history topics alongside CISCE’s Civics component on the Union Legislature, Judiciary, and State Government.
  • Computer Science — Java programming, arrays, strings, and object-oriented concepts tested in both written and practical components.

CISCE publishes the official syllabus document as a PDF on its website each academic year. Always cross-check with the official document alongside your school’s prescribed textbooks — Selina Concise, Frank Brothers, and S.Chand are the most widely used publishers across ICSE schools.

Year-Wise Updates: ICSE Board Exam 2021, 2022, and 2023

The ICSE board exam schedule and format changed significantly between 2021 and 2023 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here is a concise year-by-year summary to clarify what changed and when normal examinations resumed.

ICSE Board Exam 2021

CISCE cancelled the ICSE board exam 2021 written examinations due to the second wave of COVID-19. Results were declared on the basis of an alternative assessment policy — internal marks, project work, and a formula developed in consultation with the government. No written board paper was conducted for Class 10 in 2021.

ICSE Board Exam 2022

The ICSE board exam 2022 was conducted in a two-semester format for Class 10. Semester 1 (November 2021) covered a reduced, MCQ-based paper, while Semester 2 (April–May 2022) covered the remaining syllabus with subjective questions. The icse board exam result 2022 was declared in July 2022, with CISCE reporting an overall pass percentage above 99%.

For the 12th icse board exam 2022 (ISC Class 12), the same two-semester structure was followed. ISC results 2022 were also declared in July, with Science stream students performing strongly in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

ICSE Board Exam 2023

The ICSE board exam 2023 returned to a single annual written examination format. Exams for Class 10 were held in February–March 2023, with results announced in May 2023. The pass percentage remained above 98%, and the full CISCE syllabus was examined for the first time since 2019.

ICSE Board Exam vs CBSE — Key Differences

Students and parents frequently compare the ICSE board examination with CBSE before choosing a school. Both are nationally recognised, but they differ in curriculum depth, language of instruction, and grading methodology.

The ICSE board is generally considered to have a more detailed syllabus, particularly in English Language, Sciences, and History. This can be an advantage for students targeting competitive entrance exams that reward deep conceptual understanding. However, CBSE’s wider school network makes it more accessible in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

ICSE stands for Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. The examination is conducted by CISCE — the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations — for students completing Class 10. It is one of two major examinations run by CISCE, the other being the ISC for Class 12.

Yes. The ICSE board exam 2022 was split into Semester 1 (November 2021, MCQ-based) and Semester 2 (April–May 2022, subjective). This was a one-time arrangement due to pandemic disruptions. From 2023 onwards, CISCE reverted to the standard single annual examination format.

Free PDF downloads of ICSE Class 10 question papers and sample papers are available on this page. The collection includes past papers for Chemistry, Computer Science, History & Civics, Art, and Environmental Science, all sourced directly from CISCE-affiliated resources.

The ICSE board exam is generally considered more detailed in its syllabus, especially in English, Sciences, and History, because it demands descriptive and analytical answers. CBSE, being NCERT-based, is more concise and is widely regarded as better aligned with competitive entrance exams like JEE and NEET. The right choice depends on a student’s learning style and long-term goals.

CISCE declared the ICSE board exam result 2022 in July 2022. Results were available on the official CISCE website and through SMS. The overall pass percentage for ICSE Class 10 in 2022 was reported to be above 99%, partly because of the lenient two-semester structure.

The most widely used textbooks for the ICSE board exam are Selina Concise (for Sciences and Mathematics), ML Aggarwal (for Mathematics), Frank Brothers (for History and English), and S.Chand (for various subjects). Always verify the latest prescribed book with your school, as CISCE periodically updates its recommendations.

The icse board exam remains one of India’s most comprehensive secondary school assessments, and staying prepared with the right resources makes all the difference. Bookmark this page — it is updated every year with the latest syllabus, question papers, and free PDF downloads for all ICSE classes.
