What the 2023 to 2026 Geography Papers Cover

Every paper in the table follows the same structure. The exam carries 80 marks and allows two hours of writing time. You get a separate 15-minute reading period before the clock starts. The paper splits into two parts.

  • Part I (30 marks): Compulsory. Question 1 is a 20-mark multiple-choice section based on a topographic map extract.
  • Part II (50 marks): You attempt five questions from this section. Marks for each part are given in brackets.

The standard Indian papers use the Survey of India Map Sheet. The 2023, 2024, and 2026 papers use Sheet No. G43S7. The 2025 paper uses Sheet No. G43S10. The Thailand papers use an Outline Map of Thailand. The Indian papers also supply 20 cm of twine for measuring distances on the map.

Recurring Topics Across the Geography Papers

Certain question types appear year after year. The 20-mark MCQ in Question 1 always tests your map reading skills. You must identify landforms, grid references, and directions from the extract.

Recurring question typeYears seen in the papersTypical mark tag
Four-figure grid reference2024, 2025[20] sub-part
Direction of one settlement from another2023, 2024[20] sub-part
Identifying landforms from contours2023, 2025[20] sub-part
Survey of India map extract supply2023, 2024, 2025, 2026Paper instruction

Part II questions cover surveying, scale, distance, and direction. You will also answer questions on the geography of India and Thailand, depending on the paper variant.

How to Use These Papers for Exam Preparation

Use these papers to build speed and accuracy. The map reading section rewards practice. You need to quickly find grid references and identify landforms under time pressure.

  1. Start with the 2023 paper. Attempt Question 1 without a time limit. Learn how to read four-figure and six-figure grid references.
  2. Time your map work. Give yourself 30 minutes for the 20-mark MCQ section. This leaves enough time for Part II.
  3. Practice with real twine. The Indian papers supply 20 cm of twine. Use a string to measure curved distances like roads and rivers on the map extract.
  4. Check the map sheet number. Match your practice map extract to the sheet number listed on the paper. G43S7 and G43S10 have different features.

When you finish a paper, check your answers against the marking scheme. Each question shows its marks in brackets. A 2-mark question needs a short, precise answer. A 10-mark question needs a labeled diagram or a detailed explanation.

Common Mistakes Students Make in Map Reading

Students lose marks in the topographic map section by making small errors. Here are the most common ones and how to fix them.

  • Reversing grid references: The four-figure grid reference lists the easting first, then the northing. Students often swap them. Always read right, then up.
  • Overcrowding the map: The paper instructions tell you to use arrows. If you write answers directly on the map, it becomes unreadable. Use arrows to point to features and write the answer key outside the map.
  • Ignoring the twine: You cannot measure a curved river with a straight ruler. Use the supplied twine to trace the curve, then measure the twine against the scale.
  • Mixing up the map sheets: The 2025 paper uses Sheet G43S10. If you practice only on G43S7, the features will look different in the exam. Practice on both sheets.
