ICSE Class 10 Hindi Quarterly Tests PDF Study Guide
ICSE Class 10 Hindi Quarterly Tests: what to practise first
ICSE Class 10 Hindi preparation means practising language writing, grammar, unseen comprehension and prescribed-text answers in a clear order. Quarterly tests are school-level assessments, not official CISCE board papers, but they are useful because they show whether you can write accurate Hindi answers before longer pre-board and board-style practice begins.

Use this page as a study guide for Hindi quarterly-test and unit-test practice. It explains the paper areas, preserves the available PDF resource, gives model answers, and shows how to correct the mistakes that usually cost marks in Hindi.
Concept snapshot: Treat a Hindi quarterly paper like a mirror, not like a prediction paper. A mirror does not change your preparation; it shows what is visible. In the same way, one test reveals whether your spelling, sentence order, answer length, grammar usage and literature recall are ready for the next stage.

Some schools use the words “unit test”, “quarterly test” or “first term test” differently, so follow the instructions printed on your school paper.

This PDF is useful for early revision because it contains extract-based questions from prose and poetry, a vocabulary or usage section, and a short composition task of about 250 words. It should be used as practice material, not as proof of a fixed official quarterly-test pattern.
Hindi paper areas in ICSE Class 10
For the public ICSE Second Language examination, CISCE lists one written paper of three hours carrying 80 marks, with 20 marks for Internal Assessment. The written paper is divided into Section A, Language, and Section B, Prescribed Texts. Students should verify the exact subject rules from the official CISCE Second Language syllabus PDF for their examination year.
| Area | What it checks | How a quarterly or unit test may use it |
|---|---|---|
| Composition / निबंध | Ability to organise ideas in Hindi with introduction, body and conclusion | A 250-word or school-decided writing task on a story, description, argument or reflection |
| Letter writing / पत्र लेखन | Correct format, address, purpose, tone and closing | Formal or informal letter practice, if included by the school |
| Comprehension / अपठित गद्यांश | Understanding a passage and answering in Hindi without copying blindly | Short answer questions based on an unseen or taught passage |
| Grammar and usage / व्याकरण | Correct use of vocabulary, sentence construction, idioms and forms | Word meaning, sentence use, muhavara, vilom, samas, sandhi or sentence correction depending on the taught portion |
| Prescribed texts | Understanding prose, poetry, characters, theme and context | Extract-based questions from early chapters or poems covered in class |
Syllabus-specific insight: Hindi is a language paper, so marks are not earned only by remembering a chapter summary. A student must answer in correct Hindi, keep the answer tied to the question, and use the required format for writing tasks.
How to use Hindi quarterly-test papers
Do not begin by reading sample answers. A Hindi test is useful only when it checks recall, grammar accuracy and writing speed together.
- Match the portion first. Check whether the prose, poem or grammar topic has been taught in your school.
- Set a time limit. If the paper gives time, use it. If it does not, practise the extract section and writing section separately.
- Write in full sentences. In literature and comprehension, avoid one-word answers unless the question asks for one word.
- Keep formats separate. A letter, essay, extract answer and grammar answer are not written in the same style.
- Correct the paper immediately. Mark spelling errors, incomplete answers, weak grammar and missing context in different colours.
- Rewrite only the weak answers. Rewriting every answer wastes time; rewriting the wrong answer fixes the error.
Practical application: Make a Hindi error log with four columns: question type, mistake, corrected answer, and rule to remember. For example, if you lose marks in idiom usage, write the idiom, its meaning and one correct sentence.
Worked examples for Hindi answers
The following examples are original model responses based on common ICSE Class 10 Hindi practice areas. They are not copied from any answer key. Use them to learn method, answer length and presentation.
Worked example 1: answering a poetry extract question
Question type: A poem extract describes a hungry person walking with difficulty. Answer: Who is being described, what does the expression “दो टूक कलेजे के करता” suggest, and what details show his condition?
Step 1: Identify the person in the extract. The lines describe a भिक्षुक or a poor hungry man who comes to the path in a helpless condition.
Step 2: Explain the phrase in your own words. “दो टूक कलेजे के करता” means that his condition is so painful that the onlooker feels deep sorrow, as if the heart is being cut into pieces.
Step 3: Use details from the extract. His stomach and back appear to have become one because of hunger. He walks with support, asks for a handful of grain, and carries an old torn bag.
Model answer: यहाँ एक भूखे और दीन भिक्षुक का वर्णन है। कवि बताता है कि उसकी दशा देखकर मन में तीव्र करुणा उत्पन्न होती है; इसी भाव को “दो टूक कलेजे के करता” कहा गया है। उसका पेट और पीठ भूख से जैसे एक हो गए हैं। वह सहारे से चलता है, मुट्ठी भर अन्न पाने की आशा करता है और अपनी फटी-पुरानी झोली फैलाता है।
Worked example 2: planning and writing a 250-word composition
Question: “जिसने अनुशासन सीख लिया, उसने जीवन का एक बड़ा गुण सीख लिया।” इस विषय पर लगभग 250 शब्दों में लेख लिखिए.
Step 1: Decide the central idea. The answer should explain that discipline is self-control in study, time, speech and behaviour.
Step 2: Divide into paragraphs. Paragraph 1 introduces discipline. Paragraph 2 gives school and home examples. Paragraph 3 explains benefits. Paragraph 4 gives a short conclusion.
Step 3: Keep language simple. Avoid long sentences that may create gender, tense or spelling errors.
Model composition:
Worked example 3: using a muhavara correctly
Question: मुहावरे “नाक कटना” का अर्थ लिखकर वाक्य में प्रयोग कीजिए.
Step 1: Write the meaning. “नाक कटना” का अर्थ है अपमान होना या प्रतिष्ठा घट जाना.
Step 2: Make a sentence where the meaning is clear. The sentence must show dishonour; it should not literally mean cutting a nose.
Correct answer: अर्थ: अपमान होना। वाक्य: प्रतियोगिता में विद्यालय के नियम तोड़ने से पूरी टीम की नाक कट गई।
Why this works: The sentence shows loss of respect, so the idiom is used correctly.
Examiner’s mindset for ICSE Hindi answers
In ICSE Class 10 Hindi, the examiner or teacher checks whether the answer actually addresses the question. For an extract question, marks are usually protected by three visible parts: context, direct answer and supporting detail. For a writing task, the examiner looks for relevance, structure, expression, vocabulary and correctness.
- Composition: write a clear beginning, connected middle paragraphs and a closing sentence. Do not turn an argumentative topic into an unrelated story.
- Comprehension: answer from the passage, but do not copy long lines unless the question asks for exact words.
- Grammar: show usage. If asked for a sentence, the meaning must be clear inside your sentence.
- Literature: mention the speaker, situation or theme when the question needs context. A memorised summary is not enough.
Common mistakes in Class 10 Hindi
- Mistake: Writing a long answer without naming the character, speaker or situation. Correction: Start with the direct identification, then explain the point.
- Mistake: Using Hindi words with English sentence order. Correction: Read the answer aloud once; unnatural order becomes easier to catch.
- Mistake: Treating every composition as a story. Correction: Check whether the topic asks for कथा, विवेचन, वर्णन or विचार.
- Mistake: Copying the passage in comprehension. Correction: Use the idea from the passage and frame your own short sentence.
- Mistake: Using a muhavara literally. Correction: First learn the figurative meaning, then make a sentence that proves that meaning.
- Mistake: Ignoring spelling of common words such as क्योंकि, विद्यार्थी, अनुशासन and आवश्यक. Correction: Keep a spelling list and revise it before each Hindi test.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are ICSE Class 10 Hindi quarterly tests official CISCE papers?
No. ICSE Class 10 Hindi quarterly tests are school-level assessments. CISCE publishes the syllabus and examination rules, while individual schools decide quarterly-test portions, marks and duration.
Where can I download ICSE Class 10 Hindi Quarterly Tests — Free PDF Download resources?
Use the download table on this page to open the available Hindi PDF in a new tab. After downloading, solve the paper in writing and compare each question with the portion taught in your school.
What should I revise before a Class 10 Hindi quarterly test?
Revise the prose or poetry extracts taught in class, grammar and vocabulary topics covered by your teacher, one composition format and one comprehension passage. For ICSE Class 10 Hindi, answer presentation matters as much as recall.
How should I write better literature answers in Hindi?
Begin with the direct answer, add the context, and then give one supporting detail from the extract or chapter. Avoid writing only a memorised summary when the question asks for a specific explanation.
Does Hindi grammar require technical definitions in ICSE Class 10?
The CISCE Second Language syllabus stresses practical use of vocabulary, syntax and idioms rather than only grammatical terminology. Learn rules, but practise them through correct sentences, examples and usage.
How do I improve my Hindi composition marks?
Plan four short paragraphs before writing: introduction, two body paragraphs and conclusion. Keep the topic central, use simple correct sentences, and check spellings, gender agreement and punctuation in the last few minutes.
